Reduced and Income-Based Session Fees

As a practice, we understand that ascertaining quality mental health care often requires a significant financial commitment. We strive to make psychotherapy attainable to all, regardless of income, and offer options such as reduced and income-based rates for clients working with pre-license clinicians. This can be especially beneficial for services not covered by health insurance, such as couple psychotherapy.

  • Lowered/Reduced Session Fee: A rate that has been reduced or discounted from the regular session price. This rate is available for clients working with a clinician practicing on a limited permit.
  • Sliding-Scale Scale Fee: The rate for each session is based on the client(s)' household income rather than determined by the flat-rate typical fee (per client's report). This rate is available to clients working with a graduate-level therapist in training.

Formula typically used to determine the rate per session: 0.001 x annual household income

(Example: For a household income of $65,000 the session fee = $65)

Limited-Permit Clinician

This refers to a marriage and family therapist who has completed graduate-level training and is earning clinical hours towards full licensure. These therapists are competent in treating all issues, just as with any fully-licensed clinician. A "Limited Permit" hold does have a license to practice, "limited" meaning that they are required to have their clinical work reviewed by an approved supervisor until they have satisfied all requirements for an unrestricted license to practice. Clients working with Limiter-Permit clinicians can enjoy the benefit of a fee reduction for couple and family sessions. For more information on the requirements for marriage and family therapists in New York practicing on a limited permit, please visit the state's Office of the Professions website

Graduate-Level Therapist in Training

This refers to a clinician who is currently enrolled in a marriage and family therapy graduate school training program (masters or doctoral level) from an academic institution that has been accredited by the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). As a part of clinical training, all programs require students to practice for a minimum of 1-2 years under the supervision of both a clinical supervisor at the practice as well as at the academic institution. For more information on the accreditation process of academic institutions and other AAMFT requirements for clinical training programs, please visit the AAMFT website. Clients working with a Graduate-Level Therapist in Training are able to pay a session fee based on their household income rather than the full session rate, commonly referred to as a "Sliding-Scale Fee."

For more information on reduced fees and working with a therapist in training, please contact the practice directly via phone or email. We are happy to clarify any questions about these therapists' level of training and experience, and clinical supervision.
